haha I'm just celebrating the Pens' win over the Sens. I'm allowed to have one day of happiness :)

I am not one to believe that the Pens will be able to steamroll over the rest of the East and whichever team comes out of the West. I think the Pens can win, but it will be a tough battle.

Winning the Stanley Cup is not an easy task.

Very true! lol. Anyway, I was just teasing you! I'm sad about the Sens getting swept, but that's what they deserve for the way they've been playing, or rather, for not playing. It continues as "Go Devils" for me, but that may not be for much longer either. I have faith, but things don't look so good at the moment. Maybe they'll be joining the Sens on the golf course really soon. I suppose, if they do go out, maybe Marty will be at the WC games...if that's the case, I'm definitely gonna have to find a way down to Halifax and a place to stay for at least a day or two!

haha, love it!

sarah - I'm hoping Brodeur can help the Devils find their way into round 2 because I'd rather see them there than the Rangers, but things definitely aren't looking good. Yzerman still has a goalie spot open for Team Canada (only Cam Ward and Pascal Leclaire are confirmed to play), and Luongo is a no-go, so I think Brodeur would fit in nicely. Thing is, it's a big commitment to make when you have family...a girl can still hope, though.

dabich - isn't this just a great day?? Much better than last year. I still cannot believe that the Sens organization didn't take down that huge mural outside the Pens locker room - didn't they realize that it could help the Penguins find that extra motivation to beat the Senators? I just don't get it.

Best thing Ron Cook has written here in Pittsburgh in years...

My favorite part was this...

"Team picture in front of the mural," Orpik said, rather loudly, a reference to the huge picture Senators management hung outside the Penguins' locker room, showing the handshake line after the Senators took out the Penguins in five playoff games last spring.

Stoosh - that is some seriously awesome writing by Ron Cook. I couldn't help but get excited about what the near future may hold for these guys and for us fans.

I liked what Candyman had to say, but I liked this bit too:

"Ottawa stars Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza each had just an assist in the series. Spezza had a mere 10 shots, Heatley nine. Heck, Hossa had nine shots last night."

...and weren't 7 of those 9 shots by Hossa in the first period??

Stoosh said...

Watching Hossa in the playoffs must be what it's like for Caps fans to watch Ovechkin all the time. It doesn't bother me at all.

Hossa knows he's playing for a contract, so he's obviously going to be shooting the puck a ton. Eventually, some of these things are going to start going in.

Gettingaheadofmyselfblog...

I've kind of changed my tune on Hossa a little bit. Back when we got him, I was about 95% sure the Pens were going to try to re-sign him after the season. I figured you don't give up two roster players and two first-round picks unless you're planning on keeping the guy around, right?

Now I'm not so sure. They absolutely need to lock up Fleury, Geno and maybe even Staal before they get to Hossa. Those four are the future and Shero needs to make sure they wear Pens jerseys for as much of their careers as possible. Geno and Sid will be this generation's Gretzky-Messier, Lemieux-Francis, Sakic-Forsberg, Yzerman-Federov.

Fleury is performing just as the franchise envisioned him performing when they traded up to get him in 2003. And given his age, Jordan Staal has developed into one of the most complete players on the team. He's not scoring goals, but he's doing so many other things at such a high level, it'll be amazing to see what he's capable of when he turns like 23...let alone even 25 or 26.

On top of that, Shero absolutely loves these four guys, and why not. Staal was his first draft pick and the more I see him, the more glad I am that he never agreed to the proposed Jack Johnson deal (Johnson's gonna be great, but I'll be perfectly fine with Letang, Whitney, Goligoski and Strait three or four years down the road. I'd like to see them make a solid effort to bring Orpik back because he's really been playing great hockey the last few months.

Stoosh - I've been thinking along the same lines as you. I'd love to sign Hossa, but not at the expense of Fleury. Conklin had a great run while MAF was out, but he has returned to earth and will be a good backup goalie for the Pens. Fleury has just started to figure it all out and will soon be considered one of the best goalies in the NHL. We already know this, but the rest of the league isn't even looking in Fleury's direction.

I don't think there is any way they'll be able to sign Hossa when the time comes...and I'm kinda doubtful that they'll ever be able to afford Malkin, with the amount they are paying Crosby. If they do manage to sign Malkin, say goodbye to having a well-balanced team, because with two massive contracts with Crosby and Malkin, and then you add Fleury into the mix, well, the rest of the team is gonna have to be much lower-level players, because their salary cap won't allow them to have too many good to excellent players on the team...unless they manage to find someone who doesn't care about the money, but in the NHL, chances of that are slim to none. It's always about the money, although it shouldn't be, but that's an entry for a later time.

Sarah - I'm hoping that the guys will take a bit of a hometown discount. Malkin would deserve top dollar, for sure, but I can't see him making more than Crosby. I think Staal's lack of scoring this year may help in lowering his price tag for the time being, but I doubt he'll be signed until next season so who knows. I have long resigned to the idea that Hossa is gone come July 1st because he'll be looking for Briere money and it's not something that Shero can afford. Hopefully we can keep Gill and Dupuis.

I'm not sure what will happen in the end, but I have faith that Shero will not make Pittsburgh "Tampa Bay North".

Maybe. You all know the Penguins better than I do. But I suppose I'm hoping they can't afford Malkin because I know that Malkin and Crosby make a killer couple and that scares me, as a Devils fan...a team that would have to face the Penguins more than the majority of the other teams in the league...lol.

My poor, poor Devils :( Stupid Rangers! lol. Ah well, better luck next season, I hope! So, if the Devils decide to keep playing the trap, they are gonna need one or two or more high-ranking defensemen. After the loss of Rafalski, I knew things would go downhill. I guess we'll have to wait and see what Lou does!

Anyway, other than that, it is waiting to see if Marty is gonna show for the WC games! I would love to see that!

Ashley said...

Stupid Rangers, indeed. Ugh, it's looking like we will face them in round 2. I would love to see Orpik wipe that smirk right off Avery's face.

Losing Rafalski (and Gomez) didn't help the Devils, but they did better than most people expected because of the Brodeur factor. You can bet that Yzerman will be giving Marty a call to see if he's available for the WC. You never know how he'll respond b/c he has kids, but since the games are in eastern Canada...there's a possibility. I think I'd go insane if Marty was our goalie for the WC haha.

I also think Heatley may join the ranks, and maybe a player or two from Anaheim since most of them are Canucks (assuming the Stars finish them off). And then there may be Iginla/Phaneuf if Calgary is eliminated, or Thornton/Clowe/Marleau if San Jose is taken out...I can't wait to hear who else is coming to Halifax.

Sarah - here's something that the Pensblog found..

"Everyone talks about how classless I am, but I guess Fatso there just forgot to shake my hand."

— Sean Avery on Martin Brodeur

Well, maybe Marty didn't want to touch Avery's hand. Who knows where it has been.

Anonymous said...

Very true! I think Avery should be watching his back...I can't believe he said that! It's very, very rude! Man, poor Marty...I think it says a lot if he's able to keep himself from killing Avery, as hard as it must be.

Also, you have to keep in mind that half of the WC games are in Quebec City, which may be enough to convince him to play, since he is from Quebec, and I know that is where he lives in the summer. And yeah, I'm definitely excited to hear who else Team Canada will get...are there still tickets available down there? I want to go to a few games sooo bad, but its not cheap. When my friend and I went down to watch NYI vs. BOS and TOR vs. OTT, we stayed at the Prince George Hotel, and we probably burned up like 600 or 700 bucks each in one weekend. But it was totally worth it. If I can find someone to go down with me, I think I'm definitely gonna go. Pray that I find somebody! lol.

As far as I know, there are still single game tickets available for the WC. Tix are $74 each for the lower bowl and most of the upper bowl. The only sold out game is the Canada/USA game.

Tickets

If you do end up going to Halifax, you should look into getting a residence room. My dad and I are staying in a 2-room apartment at the Mount for about (I think) $80 a night which includes a hot breakfast. Double, non-apartment rooms are cheaper (I think about $60 a night, inc. b'fast). Or, you could check out Dal if you don't have a car and would rather stay downtown. It's definitely cheaper than staying in a hotel room that will be charging an arm and a leg for rooms those two weeks.

Ash, maybe the wall thing was payback for our fans' posters about Murray's lisp...but it sure backfired on them!
"I would love to see Orpik wipe that smirk right off Avery's face." That makes two of us, girl. i CANNOT stand that azzmunch!

Ashley said...

Dabich - you could be right about the mural being 'pay back', but I'm just surprised that they wouldn't think that it could be seen as extra motivation by the Penguins.

DaBich said...

I'm sure it WAS motivation, Ashley, but it bit them in the butts! lol
